A Little About Vintage Clothes and Sizing
The staff at Vintage Mirage are knowledgeable about the sizing of all of our clothing. Please let us assist you in locating the most comfortable garments.
Since the Victorian Era to the present day, there has been no common sizing system. Each era had a different proportion measuring system and style. Often, since many of the articles were made to order, tailors and dress makers did not include sizing labels in their garments.
Our goal is to locate and choose the size that enhances the figure of each client who comes into Vintage Mirage. All of the garments in the store are measured and marked on the tag with bust, waist, and hip measurements, and then grouped by size on the racks.
The drapery and closures of the 1930’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s are amazing. Since many garments were made to order for the client, there can be unusual tucks, closures, under garments, and patterns for the various fabrics, which were designed to enhance the best silhouette or architecture of each client. Many of the dresses also have a matching jacket in the same material and the buttons are often hand made in covered fabric, shell, rhinestones, or glass.
In addition, the distinctiveness of the 1950’s can be found in the era’s cocktail dresses which used beads and drapery to show beautiful backs. These 1950’s garments had metal zippers and sometimes included draped, gauzy fabric as scarves attached to the dress for flair. In addition, the jackets in the 1950’s were of dress hem length or short bolero length. Now current fashion trends encourage you to use the sheath dress with a jacket as the new suit.
These fine details of our genuine vintage garments offer timeless outfits.
If you see some great and luscious outfit on our social media links or our Look Book pages, come to the store to try it on. Our intent is to inspire and embellish your personal style. These garments are all one-of-a-kind, so if it is sold, it has gone to a new home.
