Elinor Coleman, the owner of Elinor Coleman’s Vintage Mirage and co-founder of the Alexandria and Arlington ‘Reuse Resource Guide,’ moved to Alexandria in the fall of 2003. For the 23 years prior, Elinor lived and worked in Soho, New York City—the center of the downtown dance, visual art, music, fashion scenes and the vintage clothing mecca.
As Artistic Director of the Elinor Coleman Dance Ensemble/Danse Mirage, Inc., a professional modern dance company, Elinor created choreography, designed costumes and stage sets for her concert stage productions, community and educational residencies, performed throughout the US, Canada, Japan, and Europe. Elinor’s company designed and taught performing arts curriculum for the NY City Public Schools; participated in the creation of the first city, state and national performing arts standards, and served as Dance Specialist for several state education departments. Prior to NYC residency, Elinor lived and worked professionally as a dancer/ teacher in Europe.
Elinor’s mission when she moved to Alexandria was to direct her knowledge of fashion and style toward the goal of opening a unique store to fill an unmet need in the Washington, D.C. area for unique vintage items. Elinor also wanted to offer a unique and world wide view of personalized advice on how to dress and maintain vintage designer clothing, jewelry, and accessories.
Her goal at Vintage Mirage is to find good homes for the items offered for sale. Elinor hopes to impart a sense of history and respect for the craftsmanship evident in the making of these items.
Elinor Coleman is a member of the Alexandria and Arlington Reuse and Recycle Committee, National Button Society, Victorian Society of Falls Church, National Association of Resale and Thrift Shops, National Dance Educators Organization, and serves on the Advisory Board of Dance Place, Washington, D.C.
